Calathea Ornata or Pin Stripe Calathea is a tropical houseplant most well-known for its bright, uniquely patterned, and intense foliage. The striking contrast of the thin pink stripes against glossy dark green leaves creates an almost hand-painted effect. The unique foliage is slender and oval-shaped with dark purple undersides and is safe for cats and dogs, according to theASPCA Plant Toxicity List. Ideal care for the Ornata Calathea includes medium to bright indirect light and moist soil. This plant does like to dry slightly between each watering, though, and it is best to use distilled water over tap water. Your plant will also benefit from applying a well-balanced houseplant fertilizer in the growing months of spring and summer. While your indoor plant is tolerant of wet roots, it prefers not to be heavily saturated and enjoys a well-draining potting mix. When you re-pot your Calathea ornata from its nursery pot, select a planter with a drainage hole to protect your plant from root rot. Originating from the tropical climate of South America, Calathea plants grow best in high humidity levels. We recommend regular misting twice weekly or using a pebble tray to boost moisture levels to increase your tropical plant’s humidity levels. As a member of the Prayer Plant family, you can be easily entertained by how the Calathea Ornatafoliage moves with the direction of the light. This plants’ pink and green foliage makes for a fun statement piece to a space and will surely add to a home’s overall aesthetic.
